Microbial biofilm are dynamic communities of bacteria formed in response to environmental changes. From an endodontic perspective, microbial biofilm are important therapeutic target since there are several reports of biofilm mode of bacterial growth in infected root canals. Unfortunately, biofilm bacteria are particularly resistant to antimicrobials and are difficult targets to eliminate. Furthermore, the responses of host immune system to microbial biofilms are also distinctly different. This lecture will deliberate the fundamentals of root canal irrigation dynamics and the current status of root canal irrigation. The basics and current status of advanced antibiofilm options for root canal treatment will also be discussed.
